Winter is upon us.  Brrrr!

I get chilled just thinking about below freezing temperatures!

Winter is the time for bundling up to stay warm, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on looking beautiful.  Even though it’s a time for wearing those “not so flattering” turleneck sweaters and Ugg boots, there are so many gorgeous scarves, wraps, shawls and hats that can help you look fashionable, yet keep you warm and snugly.

Some great fibers for warmth and beauty:

Alpaca fleece is the natural fiber harvested from an alpaca.  It is light weight or heavy weight, depending on how it is spun. It is soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin which makes it hypoallergenic. Alpaca is naturally water-repellent.  Items made with Baby Alpaca fiber are softer than those made with adult fiber, but usually more expensive as well.

Pashmina is the under fur of the Himalayan mountain goat and often hand woven in beautiful weaves into amazing Pashmina Shawls that are soft, light, heavenly silken in feel when combined with silk and very protective at the same time.

Cashmere scarves are treated as a valuable accessory since they are made from the fleece of the Himalayan goat, also known as the Capra Circus. This wool fiber is attained scrupulously, and is hand knitted using handlooms. As the wool is very subtle the whole process of weaving a scarf is accomplished manually.  The cashmere is tissue thin and so soft, and the pattern and colors are as cool as it gets for the season.

Here are the most important priorities to keep in mind in order to help you stay warmer.

  • First, you want to keep your torso warm.
  • Second, your want to keep your head warm.
  • Third, you want to keep your feet warm.
  • Fourth, you want to keep your neck warm.
  • Fifth, you want to keep your hands warm.
  • Sixth, you want to keep your legs warm.

The more layers, the better. Dressing in layers of clothing does several things for you:

  • Layers fill up the space between you and your winter coat with insulation. An undershirt, a shirt, and a sweater each represent one layer. The more layers of insulation, the better.
  • Layers tend to trap air better. If you have only an overcoat on, the warm air next to your body tends to leak out of the top and bottom of the overcoat as you make body movements. Layers help to hold this air in.
  • Layers allow you to regulate your body temperature more accurately. If you get too warm, you can always open up a layer — starting with opening up the top of your overcoat and progressively opening up more and more layers as you get warmer and warmer.

Be aware that you loose more heat through your head than any other body part.

Keeping your head warm is so critical that your body will sacrifice any other body parts before it will let the brain get cold.  The reason your feet and hands get cold is because you are losing heat in the head area. Why? Because hands and feet are low priority and your head is top priority.  This is the body’s system for rationing its limited heat supply.

Keep your feet warm.

Your feet are in contact with the cold ground. You should wear well-insulated boots. Wool socks are great if you can find them and layer them if necessary.  Boots with fur lining can keep your tootsies nice and warm.

Keep your neck warm.

You want to leave as little skin exposed as possible.  Cashmere or Pashmina scarves are great for giving you that warm fuzzy feeling.  It is also best to button or zip your jacket all the way up to keep the warmth in and the cold out.

The most important thing to remember in extreme winter weather is to not compromise on your health.   Sneezing and coughing are not very attractive, so bundle up!
